Simultaneous interpreting, a service that allows participants at international meetings to speak and follow proceedings in their own languages, is widely viewed as a particularly impressive form of rapid and instant oral translation. As a standard medium of multilingual and multicultural communication in the international conferences or organizations, simultaneous interpreting is playing an increasingly important role in the international community with the rapid development of international exchanges nowadays. However, simultaneous interpreting is a relatively young discipline. Those people, who are not the insiders of the translation circle, can rarely have a real understanding of simultaneous interpreting. With the rapid growth of China's economy, along with the frequent international exchanges with the outside world, the need to disclose the mystery of simultaneous interpreting to more people is quite necessary. This thesis gives a systematic analysis of the definition, history, process, criteria and the basic prerequisites of simultaneous interpreting. As an explanatory research, the author tries to focus on exploring the principles and techniques of simultaneous interpreting between English and Chinese, aiming at guiding the practice of simultaneous interpreting between English and Chinese more effectively. Based on the analysis of major differences and the transformational models between English and Chinese, the author proposes five basic principles for simultaneous interpreting: syntactic linearity, appropriate adjustment, anticipation, information reformulation and overall equivalence. To facilitate a better understanding of simultaneous interpreting between English and Chinese, the techniques of simultaneous interpreting from English to Chinese and vice versa are illustrated with abundant examples. Besides, some coping tactics of common sentence patterns in both English and Chinese and some concrete problems during interpreting are also discussed.Simultaneous interpreting is an integration of techniques and art. Meanwhile, as a relatively young discipline, simultaneous interpreting needs a lot of practice to enrich its theory, which in turn can better facilitate the practice of simultaneous interpreting.
