The potential complement is one of the distinctive grammatical phenomena in modern Chinese language. Foreign students can learn this grammatical structure easily, however, they know little about the restriction rules on syntax, connotation and pragmatic usage. Therefore, it is very common that foreign students make mistakes or avoid to use potential complement.Guided by the theory of language learning strategies and error analysis, this thesis analyses the corpus which contains 3,750,000 Chinese characters from the point of teaching Chinese as a second language. By building the corpus of usage of potential complements by Chinese people, we summarize the usage situation of potential complements which is the base of designing a questionnaire. After investigating 200 Chinese people and foreigners, we summarize the phenomenon and reasons of avoidance in the way of contrastive analysis. Based on the analysis of the types of potential complements, we discuss the reasons of errors and raise relative teaching strategies.Part I illustrates the purpose, significance, scope and method of this research. It also introduces the research summary of potential complement.Part II summarizes the fundamental conditions of how Chinese people use potential complements by analysing the potential complements in the database. For example, the connotations of potential complement, the language structures and the language habits of Chinese people.Partâ…¢investigates the avoidance phenomenon from different angles and indicates that the nature of second language study, the mother language of learners and the guide of teachers and text books cause the students to avoid to use potential complement. It also puts forward the solutions, which are to create real language environment, to teach only the essential and ensure plenty of practice, and to conduct psychological guidance. PartIV classifies the errors in the compositions and questionnaires of foreign students and analyzes the reasons for the errors in two ways-the students and the teachers. It also raises relative teaching strategies.Part v summarizes the full text and looks up the deficiencies.
