The translation of news is of significant importance given the context of the information age and globalization. In news translation, the communicative translation method is a must due to various factors.First of all, there are numerous linguistic and cultural differences between English and Chinese, so the traditional semantic translation often cannot guarantee a smooth and natural translation, which will not cause any cognitive barrier or misunderstanding for the target language audience. Secondly, given the fierce competition of today's media society, an attractive translation often means more income, and it's the responsibility of the translator to offer the readers an elegant translation, which is a pleasure to read. Besides, ideological differences must be taken into consideration and political rewriting is necessary when dealing with sensitive topics in news translation. To sum up, communicative translation serves to make the translation acceptable to the target language audience in the transfer of information. Moreover, the communicative translation method conforms to the skopos theory and the cultural turn in today's translation studies. The thesis is devided into four chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction of the whole thesis, including its theoretical support, practical background, and the research methodology. The second chapter serves to provide several relevant supporting theories for the research in order to build a solid foundation for the later analyses. These theories include Vermeer's highly influential skopos theory, the "cultural turn" in the field of translation studies, and "equivalent effect and the method of communicative translation" raised by Newmark. The third chapter intends to explore the reasons why communicative translation method is widely used in news translation:for the sake of "expressiveness", for the sake of "elegance", and because of ideological differences and political re-writing. Besides, it gives suggestions on how to effectively apply communicative translation method in doing news translation. In addition to a lot of examples from various sources, the author's own analyses, comments and suggestions for future news translation have also been provided. This chapter is an illustration of the three main theories in chapter two, but some other supporting theories have also been added. The last chapter is a natural conclusion of the whole paper. In addition, an important reminder has been put forward in this chapter, that is, no excessive "flexibility", which conforms to the fidelity rule, or inter-textual coherence of the skopos theory.
