Translation, especially one function of literary translation, is to promote cultural communication between different nations and make people to know more about other ethnic culture. China is noted for its long history and splendid civilizations. However, its unique national culture, especially the culture-loaded words, which is not very well known and accepted by the outside world. Facing with the fierce global economic competition, how to spread Chinese national culture and let the world know China and its splendid culture become necessary and imperative.Culture-loaded words, the quintessence of national culture, have profound national connotations and strong national characteristics. How to effectively introduce those national cultures to the outside and let the world know China? At present, especially in cultranslation, there are two different translation strategies: domestication and foreignization. What is the internal relationship between them? How about the criteria applied to cultranslation? What is the issue of translatability and untranslatability? All those controversial topics existed in translation sphere for long time.At this point, the thesis chooses the masterpiece, Ah Q Zhengzhuan, as the typical representative of Lu Xun, the great standard-bearer of national culture. According to Venuti's foreignizing translation, the author selects two typical versions and makes comparative and contrastive study in terms of different translation purposes, strategies and methods employed in the translated texts. Through comparative analysis, the author points out:In cultranslation, both domestication and foreignization serve the translator's initial intention, but foreignizing translation is more effective in transferring foreignness, the translator should try to employ foregnization dynamically to get the best effect; The standards of measuring translated version should take the translator's intention into consideration; Strategies and methods employed in cultranslation should be various and flexible; As to translatability or untranslatability, it's a matter of degree.Although the above exemplification has certain limitations, it provides specific illustrations from all sides on culture-loaded words, including some debatable issues. To some extent, the thesis has certain values on researching culture-loaded words.
