Land is the most important basis of existence and development of human being. With the rapid growth of population in China, demand for farmland has increased and much farmland has been used as non-agricultural land, which has resulted in sharp reduction in farmland area, continuous degradation in its quality and serious damage to natural ecological environment. Therefore, it is very important to understand farmland use change properly and to adjust the velocity of the change in order to realize sustainable land use. On the base of reviewing the studies in the past, this paper discusses the economic reasons for converting farmland into construction land, points out that economic benefit driving is the main reason, and analyses mechanism of economic benefit concerning land. The paper includes three parts as following: Part 1 makes the significance of studying the mechanism of economic benefit clear by listing problems of farmland use change, and analyses the mechanism. It is composed of chapter 2 and chapter 3. At first, chapter 2 enumerates the problems of farmland use change such as decrease in farmland area, deterioration in its quality and damage to ecological environment. It draws a conclusion that land use in China turns to be unsustainable. So it is necessary to study the phenomenon. Then, it discusses economic reasons for farmland use change and indicates that economic benefit driving is a principal reason for accelerating the change. As a result, applying the mechanism of economic benefit concerning land to adjust the velocity of farmland use change is essential to sustainable farmland use, which is the first of sustainable land use. Chapter 3 first defines concept of mechanism of economic benefit concerning land and sets up the mechanism system which includes mechanism of land price, land tax, land fee and the combination of the three. After that, it probes into the mechanism and its operation based on the formation of farmland use change market. Finally, it summarizes problems of the mechanism system and puts forward countermeasures. Part2 (chapter 4) is a case study of the countries characterized by few population and large land such as USA and France and those characterized by large population and little land such as Japan and Taiwan region. It introduces their farmland use change and their economic or legal countermeasures. From the introduction, somt inspirations of how to protect our farmland by improving mechanism of economic benefit are raised. Part 3 including chapter 5 only takes the developed and densely populated city, Jiangyin, as an example. It looks into the component and allotment of the income from farmland use change, points out the defects of Jiangyin's mechanism system of economic benefit concerning land. Afterwards, it advises how to consummate the mechanism system according to the marked correlation between people's quantity preference for altered farmland and the mechanism of economic benefit concerning land.
