College counselors, a special group among faculty members, are mainly responsible for ideological and political education and mental health education toward college students, management of students'academic performance, students'campus life and competitions. These counselors'job features special targets, intractability, unfixed work time and unlimited value. However, while performance management has not yet been extensively adopted by colleges and the practice of it remains to be improved, the performance management of the counselors lacks attention particularly. With the development of the modern society, colleges are in increasingly imperative demand for application of performance management, and more and more colleges have come to understand that to evaluate the comprehensive strength of a college, they should not only concern about academic research, but also take management into account. Besides, a pure and free academic environment can be created only when an efficient and scientific management system is established. As one of the most important part of the management system, performance management is self-evident in terms of its significance.This paper, aimed at the optimization research on performance management of the college student counselors, attempts to construct a scientific and practicable performance management system targeting at college student counselors. Based on the personal experience as a college student counselor, an analysis of the currently universal circumstance of the management of college student counselors domestically, and job analysis of the counselors' duties through concerned management analysis means and methods, the author formulates the Directions for College Student Counselors, a student counselor performance appraisal system, a student counselor performance management process system and proposes a set of support mechanism. The author intends to help establish an optimized student counselor performance management system which is scientific, practicable, operable and corresponding with the current situation of the colleges, in the hope of making a small contribution to clarifying duties of the counselors and raising awareness of their importance, as well as putting the research of college student counselor performance management into practice.
