| Family is the place where people were born and people's first living environment where people will live most of their times. Everyone was born in a certain family and lives in a certain family. As a result everyone is characteristic of his or her family. Lots of research shows that Parents, as the main implementer of home education, influence their children's personalities and later on the psychological health greatly through their speech, posture, gesture, tune or mood. At present, most researchers choose urban teenagers rather than rural teenagers as research objects. This author chooses 156 rural elementary students in Grade Two as research objects and use Egma Minnen aV Bardndos nauppforstran (EMBU), and Eysenck personality questionnaire (EPQ) to study their parental rearing patterns and their personality characteristics. The relationship between parental rearing patterns and their personalities is also studied. The results are as follows:1. Rural elementary students' Parental rearing patterns have remarkable gender differences. There are four factors that show a higher proportion among boy students. They are father's severe punishment, rejection and denying, mother's and father's over interference, and mother's excessive protection. Parents who received education in senior middle school or did not show no remarkable differences in the parental rearing patterns.2. Boys and girls in rural elementary schools have remarkable differences on nervousness (N). Girl students show a higher proportion on nervousness (N). The distribution of personality types (the introversive type, the middle type, the low, middle and high psychotic type) confronts with the normal mode. The students who belong to the middle type account for an overwhelming majority of 85.25%.3. Parental rearing patterns play an important role in shaping rural students' personalities. Parents' warmth and understanding contribute greatly to the sound development of their personalities. Father's rejection, refusal, overprotection, mother's over interference, overprotection and over lover lead to some bad personalities such as being too excited, being unsociable and being eccentric, unstable mood, unnatural and social poor.Combining the above conclusions with the past research, this author analyses the weak points of the parental rearing patterns for students in rural elementary schools. The author suggests that the possible reasons for that lie in lack of education, in lack of exchange between parents and their children, in contradiction between the increasing educational awareness and lack of educational knowledge and skills and the different rearing patterns towards the boys and girls. Two typical case studies also support the above conclusion. In order to improve the parental rearing patterns in the rural areas to promote healthy and sound growth for the children, the whole society, the schools, the families, and the students should help each other. The schools should carry out quality-oriented education, abandon the traditional concept that the main task of school is to teach. They should also have full-time or part-time psychological teachers. The schools should work with the families to form a new mode and extend the education function to the families. Governments at various levels should strengthen their control over all kinds of unlawful practices so as to build a good atmosphere. The educational functional departments at all levels should widen their duties. They should arrange some special personnel to guide family education and set up some schools for parents if condition permits. Parents should get in touch with school and the society and establish the idea of lifetime learning. They should also raise their educational levels and improve their educational skills in order to set up a favorable atmosphere for their children. |
