21st century is the century for innovation. China in 21st century needs lots innovative talents, the main character of whom is innovative thinking. Innovative thinking is a gradual postnatal acquirement. The popularization of education has lead to the fact that education has become one major factor in innovative thinking cultivation. As quality education and innovative education go further wide and deep, the cultivation of student's innovative thinking has become an important aim of education. Middle school education should attach great importance to this and improve the standard of students' innovative thinking ability. Physics is one course that can stimulate students' thinking. It is one course that has methodological quality. Thus physics should make use of its course advantage to develop students' innovative thinking. Mow to develop and improve students' innovative thinking ability effectively in middle school physical education? Thorough refection on this issue requires the educator to realize the essence of developing innovative thinking: what on earth is developing innovative thinking? How to really improve students' ability on this? Theoretical research and practice has showed that cultivation of innovative thinking should be achieved by developing whole thinking process, during which they should be able to enrich operating experiences of students' thinking, and optimize students' cognitive structure. Only by implementing this can students' innovative thinking mechanism be changed and students' innovative thinking ability is improved. Comprehension of essence of innovative thinking helps to strengthen the merits of various current innovations developing practice and avoiding their defects So that we can make our practices more effective. According to the essence of developing innovative thinking process. Practice requires the development of students' thinking process to b guided by scientific instructive principles. On the basis of fundamentals of system theory, the author has summed up to a twenty-character principle which can be comprehended as "open the thinking, form highpeaks and lower ones, break the balance, drill different factors and lay stress on feedback". The practices carried out include the ones to develop students' innovative thinking in classroom teaching and the ones done by research study. In the latter ones, the author paid attention to exerting the important function of physics history in developing students' innovative thinking and tried to combine the physics history with research study. Therefore the author chose subjects of research study form physics history to develop students' innovative thinking. According to the essence, development of students' innovative thinking also needs to value optimizing students' cognitive structure. For physics, the main cognitive structure arc physical theories, physical scientific ideas, scientific methods and the organization resulting form their relations. So the optimizing of students' cognitive structure should pay attention to the education of these three aspects. It is a good way in practice to combine physical knowledge into the education of scientific ideas and methods. Finally, the article listed some outer expression of produced innovative thinking and analyzed a concrete example.
