Teaching staffs are the main force of a university. Whether we have a sufficient, highly-qualified, creative teaching staff is a decisive factor for the accomplishment of the goal that we build Yanbian University into a teaching and research-orientated, comprehensive ethnical university. And I have made a deep research about the strategies of building a first-class teaching staff in ethnical area by using historical, investigating and comparative researching methods. And I based my research on the solid theories such as modern educational theory, ethnical educational theory, the regulations of higher education and teacher-training education. Comparing the condition of the teaching staff at the early years of the merger and the present condition of it (1996-2003), we could see some achievements and some problems as well. Here I put forward to some strategies about how to enhance the qualities of the faculty.In the early years of merger, there were some problems existing in the teaching staffs of Yanbian University. First, the number of teaching staffs was too large. The ratio of teachers to students was 1 to 6. Second, the proportion of professors at an advanced age in overall teaching staffs was particularly high with 180 professors over the age of 56, having 11.1% in overall teachers. And of it more than one third were professors over the age of 60. Third, the qualities of teaching staffs were not desirable, which was resulted from the unreasonable structure of academic credentials and titles. But after 7 years, there are still new problems cropping up now. For examples. Market economy and opening-up for employment market make it possible for teaching staffs' dropping out. The proportion of teachers leaving school accounts for 8% of the overall number of teachers that year. And the number of teachers with postgraduate degree, ofprofessors over the age of 45 and of assistant professors under the 35 are low. And measures to draw on core personnel are incomplete. Nor are the competition and impetus mechanisms.When investigating, I put forward to some way to enhance the qualities of teaching staffs.
