Career education is defined as a contemporary education reform to make all individuals become familiar with the values of a work-oriented society, to integrate these values into their personal value systems, and to implement these values into their lives by helping the students take part in a sequence of planned instructional activities related to career development, including career awareness, career exploration, career planning and decision-making, so that they can live a possible, meaningful, and satisfying life.The general high school education is the high-level elementary education in China, with the purposes of well preparing the students for the work-oriented society and increasing their opportunities for further education. Therefore, career education should be a key component in our national education to develop the quality of all the students in the general high schools comprehensively.In this article the author briefly discusses the update situation that the education related to career development is ignored at large in Chinese general high schools. So, it is very urgent and necessary to study American career education. Then, focusing on the career education in American high schools, the author identifies and discusses the key concepts of the career education movement and their implications for education reform, rethinks the problems emerged in the education reform.
