The Chinese curriculum standard has brought up a new idea of "oral communicationoriented teaching" (OCOT), with which certain changes in course object setting have beenmade. The quality of the textbook, which is the most important tool to carry out the task ofteaching, has a direct impact on whether we can get to our object or not. This thesis made adetailed analysis of the oral communication material in PEP textbook for Chinese in JuniorMiddle School, then on the basis of a thorough reading of the literature on the relevant subjectand a comparison between the same materials in different textbooks as well as interviews withthe junior middle students, described the properties in the editing of the materials in PEPtextbooks and picked out the possible problems. At last, the thesis tried to give an explanationof the reasons for the problems. This study reveals that the oral communication materials in PEP textbooks still need tobe improved in some aspects given their efforts in embodying the idea of OCOT. Thoughreasons for the problems vary, the main ones may be the following: no guidance due toinadequacy in the textbook-editing theory, as well as no references because of little formerexperience at home and little understanding of practice abroad. The significance of improvement in Chinese curriculum and Chinese textbooks hasattracted more and more attention for the time being. However, it's still a long way to go tomake people realize the advantage of the new idea of OCOT, especially in a circumstance thatpeople have long emphasized written language and ignored spoken language. So, the analysisand explanation in this thesis has its practical value and will be both useful and helpful inwriting and editing of textbooks under the idea of OCOT.
