Nowadays, although the idea of teachers' self-directed development so far has been gradually accepted by people, primary school teachers' autonomy is still generally in a low degree, and so is their actual level of self-directed development. Thus, we have designed a feasible scale, and with it investigated and interviewed 260 teachers from 14 different schools of Ji'an, Jiangxi Province and Beibei, Chongqing. The survey shows us the exact disadvantages as follows: insufficient demand for self-development which also causes an insufficient impetus to develop; incapacities of self-development; inaccurate positioning and decision-making on the conducts and tactics of self-development; and poor efficacy of the self-directed conducts. We think all the problems may be summed up as coming under two categories: subjectively, teachers are not fully aware of the essence and status of self-development, do not have enough time or energy, and also lack a strong career identification; Objectively, some positive factors such as a long-term ignoration of teachers' subjectivities in teachers' in-service training, unfavorable environments, and unreasonable evaluation and management system may be attributed to a low-effect teacher professional development. The continuing reform has already pushed the problem of teachers' development forwards to the stage of education, and teacher professional development is therefore becoming a major problem in teacher education. Teacher professional development is in essence an improvement of teachers' internal professional structure under the guide of external aims. The professionalization of primary school teacher should take the above idea as a basis, then continually give impetus to teachers and direct them to the path of self-directed (professional) development. Theoretically, the idea of teachers' self-directed development is deeply rooted from philosophical thinking such as the theory of subjectivity education; and also it has a big possibility to realize in practice.
