An Analysis On The Inner Organizational Structure Of American Universities

In the modern organization, with the continually enlargement of the size of the organization and the complexity of the organizational environments, the function of the organizational structure is becoming more and more noticeable and important. As one of the modern organization, university now is playing the more important role in the social development and constantly adjusts itself to those complex environments as well. In recent years, along with the all-around reform of our country's higher educational system, the size of university is constantly becoming enlarged, the structure of subject is becoming completed and the organizational structure is becoming complicated, all of which have given the new challenges to the traditional inner managerial system of the university.The content of this thesis is to research the American university's inner organizational structure on the bases of this kind of theory. The structural control pattern of American universities is the typical president's responsibility system under the leadership of the board. The longitudinal organization falls into three levels: school, college and department; the latitudinal organization falls into binary power structures: academic power and administrative power. With the guideline of market competition and country's intervention, the American university system is commendably adopted to the development of society and economy and also brings up many advanced human resources. We can see the American university system has the features of flexibility and multiplicity. This thesis falls into four parts: first, the historical evolution; second, the present actuality; third, the forming causes; last, the developing trend.The last part of this thesis studies the features and the problems of the organizational structure of our country's universities.
