Education, in which teachers play leading roles like disseminating civilization and training people with ability, is the foundation of a project of vital and lasting importance. Currently, with the modulation of the benefit-structure of each group in the very period of social transformation, there comes a lot of impacts and challenges in front of professional role of teachers in colleges and universities, such as the new trends, popularization, informationalization and internationalization of higher education, for example, and administration system of colleges and universities. As a result, the professional role-comprehending and role-practice of teachers in colleges and universities would have direct influence on the effect of teaching and the development of colleges and universities. The research which has been done in a eye of sociology, studied on the teachers in colleges and universities with the methods like questionnaire, interview, literature and so on, made researches and analysis on the actuality of role-comprehending and role-practice of them, explored the effect factors of the discrepancies between role-comprehending and role-practice of them, and then brought forward some countermeasures and suggestions in the aspects of the teachers and faculty-administration.From the research on the actuality of role-comprehending and role-practice of them, it can be seen that most teachers in colleges and universities consider education as the first task, scientific research as the second and social work the third. There are a lot of teachers who think that teachers in colleges and universities should educate, while the research on the actuality of their professional role-practice shows that a great number of them devote mostly on scientific research. Most teachers can pay attention to imparting knowledge to students rather than tutoring their psychology, supervising their life as well as leading their behavior.It demonstrated that responding to the effects of idealistic conception, moral culture and professional quality, there are obvious discrepancies between role-comprehending and role-practice of teachers in colleges and universities. The modulation of the benefit-structure of each group that contributes to the fall of teachers' social status, brings powerfully impacts to the professional role of teachers in colleges and universities. And the new trends, such as popularization, informationalization, perpetualization and internationalization of higher education put challenges forward it. Moreover, the faultinesses of faculty-, inspiriting- and evaluating-system infect the professional role-comprehending and role-practice of teachers in colleges and universities.Finally, with the hope of altering the phenomenon that thinking much of teaching over culturing, and scientific research over education, it brought forward some countermeasures and suggestions in the aspects of teachers, like transformating idealistic conception, raising teachers' professional ethics and competence, improving the personnel mechanism.
