Since the year 1904 the Chinese language was designated as a discipline in middle school, the importance of its extracurricular reading has been greatly noticed by most educators. Until now, however, few better solutions have been found to guide middle school students to wide and efficient extracurricular reading in which a lot of urgent problems remain to be researched and solved. All the experimental process has been placed in the background of the reform of new curriculums, considering the seven-year experiment of the regularization of reading, the importance of reading in human development, the new requirements for talented persons in the 21st century, and the current situation of reading in middle school. So, some neglected details concerned with extracurricular reading have been brought forth in the foreground according to the requirements for extracurricular reading in middle school designated in the curriculum standard of Chinese. Besides, the crux of extracurricular reading in middle school has pertinently been studied and explored, in the analysis of in-depth factors, such as reading environments, students' psychology, students' interest, reading theories at home and abroad, and also the material and data of the seven-year experiment carried out three times, in order to find out some feasible principles to further research and practice. The first chapter deals with the reform of new curriculums which is the background of the extracurricular reading research. As time goes on, the criterion of talented persons should be accordingly adjusted. Therefore, the requirements for talented persons in the 21st century have been first introduced, and then the curriculum reforms carried out at home and abroad, and the proposition, establishment and trial implementation of the new curriculum standard in our country. The second chapter dwells on the requirements designated in the old and new syllabuses about extracurricular reading in middle school, aiming to lead readers, by contrast, to a general understanding of the relevant programmatic documents and an overview of extracurricular reading. An introduction is made to the current situation of the extracurricular reading research and some successful experience. Then, the experiment of the regularization of reading is introduced together with the handling, result and data analysis of the experiment to guide extracurricular reading onto a scientific, regulatory and healthy road. The theory on which the experiment is based has been analyzed, too.The first and second chapters are the main body of the thesis. The fourth chapter mainly deals with the advantageous conditions of developing extracurricular reading in middle school in a new era, with the support of the Education Department's policies and the new concept of extracurricular reading at home and abroad. In the chapter the establishment of the multi-dimensional reading concept and the recognition of parents' role in extracurricular reading are not only connected with the with the reform of new curriculums but also accord with the requirements in a new era, with the purpose of appealing for an active participation in reading of all middle students, teachers of Chinese, parents schools and society, and enlarging the population of reading to build a society in which all the people are lovers of books, and realizing the ultimate goal of reading--- to enhance the quality of the Chinese people and to rejuvenate China.
