On entering the new 21st century, there are many challenges facing us and thus the effective way to meet them is to reform. As a great edubiz that decides the Chinese national future, educational reform has being undertaking to keep up with the social development and aims to educate all kinds of professional talents. In this reform process, course reforming is one vital task while one of important aspects is the reform of textbooks in the process. With the development of the society, it is unavoidable that the nature and functions of textbooks go through some significant changes. Due to the great changes to textbooks' nature and functions, the traditional textbooks have failed to meet the requirements of times and catch up with the social development. This paper makes a comparative study of a series of high school biology textbooks in China published by People's Education Press from 1996, on the basis of modern educational theories and educational psychological theories. It also puts forward the specific opinions on the reform of high school biology textbooks and their editing, in the hope of offering some valuable suggestion for their future reform and development.First of all, the author sorts out the basic concepts, the roles in teachings, the systems of biology textbooks and make a survey of domestic and foreign textbooks by the way of literature, and then put forward her own idea on the basic principles and requirements for editing biology textbooks.Secondly, by using the questionnaire method, the author makes a survey and analysis of the opinions of teachers and students who have used the textbooks. After that, the author makes a comparative study of the knowledge structure, exercises, experiments and teaching methods suggested in the books, which all are shown respectively in 1996 and 2000 version. It has been concluded that the 2000 version is better than 1996 in the aspects of choice of book contents, combination of theory and practice, attitudes education, experiments and exercises.With the complete implementation of new course reform, the related experimental textbooks were put into use in all schools. Since the authorized new standard biology textbooks have many versions, the author chose the 2004 version (by People's Education Press) for analysis, and then make a comparison between it and the 2000 version.
