As an important part of higher education, civilian-run colleges and universities are playing a significant role in fostering people with ability, promoting economic development and popularizing higher education. With 20 years'development, civilian-run colleges and universities have got great achievement in scale, quality and so on. But in all, they are still in the phase of slow development and hard situation. Therefore, how to solve the difficulty that hinders the development of civilian-run colleges and universities and realize their sustainable development is just becoming the realistic problem which greatly needs to be solved at the moment.The sustainable development of civilian-run colleges and universities means their development should adapt to the economic and social development, follow the rules of its'self-development and form the scientific internal running system with the support of good environment and adequate developing space. The sustainable development of civilian-run colleges and universities not only has its own necessity, feasibility and urgency, it's also the only way to solve the current problems that hinder their development. After theoretical discussing, by analyzing and comparing the development of private universities in the U.S., Japan and several similar colleges in our country such as Xi'an International University, Beijing Ji-li University, Shu-ren University and Wan-li college, the thesis explores the ways of civilian-run colleges and universities'sustainable development in the layer of conception, regulation and concrete operation. In the end, the thesis forecasts the prospect of civilian-run colleges and universities'sustainable development.
