Teaching management is a kernel work of administration in higher education institution. Several modes of teaching management have come into being and been carried out after 20th century as a result of deeper research. However, in the today' s practice, some problems, such as incorrect use of modes, ineffective management and wasting of teaching resources, still exist, caused by the fuzzy classification of teaching management modes and insufficient understanding of their essence. What are the main modes of teaching management in higher education institution? What are their features, advantages and disadvantages? How to use them to improve our management? The solving of these problems calls for a thorough comparative research. In the first part, this paper defines the research objects and classification criterion of teaching management modes in higher education institution. In the second, third and fourth parts, with the help of philosophy, history, principles of management, sociology and culturology, this paper casts a multi-angle and comprehensive analysis of different modes. In the end, the author demonstrates an orientation of modern teaching management in higher education institution: the combination of scientific management and humanistic management, international management and localization management and the widespread implement of complete credit system. Teaching management modes in higher education institution don' t develop linearly, but gradually and complementarily. These modes have no difference in rightness or falseness, best or worst, but effectiveness or ineffectiveness. This research aims to help administrators in higher education institution recognize the essence of different modes and enable them to find the most appropriate one for their practice. Hope these ideas will contribute to the development and innovation of national teaching management in the new century.
