Games can help create opportunities for students to take an active part in the English learning, and they are popular in classes in primary schools, where games are widely used for instructional purposes. However, one of the biggest problems is that a lot of games cannot produce the expected good results. Therefore, finding out these problems and exploring ways to solving them is of great necessity. This dissertation aims at investigating effective ways of using games in English teaching in primary schools. The research is based on multiple intelligences theory, constructivist learning theory and cooperative learning theory. This research data is collected from the English classes in Nanjing. A large number of classes were observed and questionnaires and interviews with the teachers were also conducted. Five typical classes were chosen among the large number of classes observed, in which five problems with the games in English classes are observed as follows.1. The language target is ignored.2. Not all the students can take part in the games in classes.3. Games are either too easy or too difficult, which are not helpful in improving the students' language skill.4. Games are too complicated to do in class which results in a waste of class time.5. Games are not well-structured.According to the analysis of the problems above, the dissertation ventures several suggestions as how to improve the situation. Firstly, teachers should focus on the language. Secondly, games should be designed such as all the students can take part in them. Thirdly, games should be neither too easy nor too difficult. Fourthly, games shouldn't be too complicated to operate. The last suggestion is that games should be well structured and instructions should be clear and easy to follow.
