With the development of higher education, the number of graduates increases sharply, so it becomes more and more difficult for them to get a job. How to help most of the graduates find an ideal job has become the concentration of universities; meanwhile, careers guidance also has become the important responsibility of universities. The teachers who are engaged in guiding careers play more and more important part in college staff. Competency theory attracted widely attention since 1990's.This paper brings the research of competency into higher educational fields, concluding the competency for career guiders in universities by making definitions of relevant conceptions such as the development of careers guidance and competency, and by doing research on some universities about the faculty and global planners. It also discusses about the application of competency in selection, training, examination and vocational development of careers guiders of universities.This paper consists of four parts:In the first part, which is an introduction, the author introduces the background and the meaning of this paper, the literature review, the content and methods of research.Then, theories related to career guidance and competency are stated in the second part, including the developing history of career guidance in universities both at home and abroad, the social role and responsibility of the university staff who guide students to develop their career. Meanwhile, the writer makes a statement about the theory of competency from its definition, methods, procedures, and combines it with career guidance in universities.The third part is a conclusion about competency for career guiders in universities, which is also the main part of the paper. The competency includes three factors: peculiarity, overall capacity, performance capacity; which are worked out to be twenty-one qualities. Besides, the concrete behavior of each competency is illustrated in this part.Lastly, the paper discusses the application of competency in the human resource management of university staff, which is reflected in selection, training, examination and vocational development of careers guiders of universities.
