Journal: "Geography teaching" has a 49-year history since its foundation in 1959. It significantly serves to promote the development of China's geography. Nowadays, in a context where curriculum is undergoing a reform, there is a necessity to review what "Geography teaching" has been through and summarize its outstanding achievements, in order to better serve the geography teaching and the construction of "geography teaching".Therefore, this paper is to conduct a statistical classification upon an overall of articles from 1980 to 2005 in the Journal. In accordance with the articles' length, 3793 articles have been screened out, which fall into two big categories: "General Knowledge of Geography" article and "Teaching" article. The above two will be sub-divided further. It is this basis that a statistical analysis concerning the number of various types of articles and their content will be carried out.The developments of the Journal and China's geography teaching more or less occur simultaneously. In 1980-2005, there were three stages of the development, in which the Journal's article, integrating with teaching reality, reflected the characteristics of the times and played an important role in addressing the teaching of major, difficult and critical issues. Over years, the Journal pays much attention to communications with its readers. Along with this good tradition, it's also cultivated a number of own characteristics such as: enriched graphics, generous knowledge, policy-oriented and dynamic reports.In order to promote the Journal's further development, this paper is to propose 11 recommendations with regards to its concept, style, contents of the articles, etc. Moreover, it provides, for the Journal's repositioning strategy, a rational cogitation upon strengthening directions of education as well as geography. After locating the Journal in a mean position, this paper is, then, to preliminarily contract marketing operation mode based on the position. Eventually, it is concluded that the Journal needs to concentrate the geographic teacher, following which to enlarge market share and, ultimately, achieve an effective guarantee of further development; Using network operating mode, activated the Journal development system, which is an important development opportunity.
