Professor Liao Shicheng engaged in educational work through life and his achievements are various,such as educational psychology,secondary education,higher normal education,educational testing and statistics,school management and many other fields.He had left a wealth of writing, excellent achievements and valuable experience,which are worthy of further study,exploration and inheritance.There are already some researches on Mr.Liao's ideology of normal education, vocational education and secondary education according to some literature reviews.But these studies not only have some omission of Mr.Liao Shicheng's ideology,but also some misunderstandings.This thesis,therefore,will further explore and discuss the ideas on school system, curriculum and teaching,education goals,school management and secondary vocational education based on the previous research.First,this thesis will make clear of the origin and evolution of Liao Shicheng's high school education ideology.Liao Shicheng had been influenced not only by the traditional Confucius culture, but also by the western pragmatism and scientism since the late 19th century and the early 20th century.Both Chinese and western culture are the main resource of his high school education ideology.Then,this thesis will systematically analyse the main content of Liao Shicheng's high school education ideology,which covers five small parts.The first part is about reform in the school system. There are all kinds of defects in Late Qing Dynasty's Ren-yin and Gui-mao Schooling System, which couldn't get rid of old-fashioned stereotype in reading the Classics and worshiping Confucius. Therefore,how to break away from historical conventions and construct a new schooling system that fit for Chinese situation,became the topics that were explored by educationists of that time.To implement "four-two school system" or "three-three school system" in high school education was discussed fiercely,however,Liao advocated the latter.The second part discusses the curriculum and teaching reform.Liao insisted on applying the departmentalized system and course-elective system in high school curriculum.The teaching methodologies are primarily discussed in teaching reform.The third parttalks about school management.There are four major characteristics of Professor Liao's thought and practice:First,advocate sound and meticulous educational experiments; Second,develop practical and scientific evaluation criteria;Third,form a rigid and flexible management style;Four,construct a highly efficient management model.The fourth part is about the education goal.Professor Liao advocated students' all-round development,not only in study,but also in morality,wisdom and physical education.And the fifth part mainly contains the secondary vocational education emphasized by Professor Liao.Pro.Liao laid much emphasis on vocational education in secondary education,which should aim at revitalizing our motherland.Third,this thesis will discuss the causes,effects of the Liao Shicheng's high school educational ideology.According to the analysis,the main elements that affect Liao Shicheng's ideology are the American secondary education,and the defects existed in the high school education at that time.The evaluation result of Mr.Liao Shicheng's secondary education is that:he has formulated his unique form of educational theory in the field of secondary education which bring up a new path in modern secondary education in China,while also marked with the the field of secondary education in his own unique form of educational theory,modern secondary education in China,opening a new path, but also marked with the time.Finally,we assume that the revelations of Liao Shicheng's high school education ideology lie in: the combination of educational theory and practice,acceleration of the secondary vocational education development,the cultivation of all-round talents,persistance in proceeding from the national conditions at home and learning from other countries' experience.
