With the advent of learning socialization, lifelong learning becomes a necessity. How to be in keeping with the requirements of our growing society has become the most attended subject. Self-directed learning may open a new avenue for us. China has entered a new development stage of accelerating the socialist modernization drive and been faced with new opportunities and challenges, which demands higher political and moral qualities of high school students. Therefore, the Sate Council of the People's Republic of China issued "Decision on the Reform and Development of Elementary Education". A comprehensive curriculum reform has been undertaken gradually. In curriculum reform,high school political lessons attach importance to the social development and the requirement in the process of high school students' growing. It develops high school students' political and moral qualities, helps them to correct outlook on the world, life and values and improves individuals' ideological, political and thinking level. It adds sense of times, pertinence, pragmaticality and initiative to political lessons. Self-directed learning is a kind of learning nature. It emphasizes self-monitored learning.Self-directed learning in high school political lessons refers to that politics teacher conduct the students to independently choose, control and regulate the elements interfering with learning. It is also an important teaching method in the area of instructional theory. Carrying out self-directed learning in the political lessons could develop the self-directed learning ability of high school students and lay a solid foundation for their lifelong development.The present thesis will begin with the connotation meaning of self-directed learning and its basic theories, cover its significance in high school political lessons. The thesis will present the reasons of the problems in self-directed learning and expound a set of self-directed learning methods. The whole thesis falls into three chapters. Chapter 1 is a review on basic theories. Based on the domestic and foreign research on self-directed learning, the author's view on self-directed learning is listed and then it comes to the conclusion that self-directed learning in high school political lessons is possible and necessary. Chapter 2 presents the problems of self-directed learning in high school political lessons. It analyses the reasons for these problems and provides a practical basis for Chapter 3. Chapter3 devotes most of the space to expound the methods to develop students' self-directed learning ability in high political lessons. Based one the previous letter, it presents a literature review on the principles and standards in self-directed learning and points out some problems which should be kept in mind, in the hope of Strengthening the students' self-directed learning ability and promoting their lifelong development. The thesis starts with the domestic and foreign research on self-directed learning, and then enters the field of high school political lessons. It discusses the methods and ways to develop and promote high school students' self-directed learning ability, which is hoped to make a due contribution to the students' lifelong development.
