Education is of fundamental importance to the fulfillment of our great long-range programs, and the teacher is the foundation for education1. The development of education cannot do without the development of the teacher. Teachers'psychological status and personality development exert a subtle influence on students'mental health and standards of behavior. They also play a very important role for teachers themselves. Mental health is the basis for teachers'work, learning and life, which is one of teachers'important qualities.Social reforms make people more aware of the importance of education and concerned with the development of education. They also raise more expectations and requirements for teachers in middle and primary schools and bring greater stress as well. Teachers'mental health has aroused widespread concern in society. A lot of research has been done about it and some theoretical bases and materials have been formed. However, teachers in different areas face different specific circumstances and the causes and conditions of their mental health vary greatly. We have seen that people pay relatively low heed to teachers'mental health and its practice in China's western rural areas and research about them there is very little. This study, based on the present status of teachers'mental health in the western rural areas in China, does some research on the status in Qu County through surveys and interviews. The Survey shows:1. Compared with the national SCL-90, the result of the teachers in middle and primary schools in Qu County is greatly different in the nine factors, the total score and the total average. Except the interpersonal sensitivity with a score lower than the national norm, the eight factors, the total average and the total score are all higher. Among them, somatization, anxiety, hostility, phobia and psychotic matters have an obvious gap with the national norm, which indicates that the teachers have bad mental health. Among the 329 teachers surveyed, 78 have positive symptoms, accounting 22.5%. That is to say, the rate of psychological problems for the teachers in Qu County is 22.5%. Among them, people with mild symptoms are 40, accounting for 10.8%; people with moderate symptoms are 7, 2.3%; people with severe symptoms are 31, 9.4%.2. The male teachers have better mental health than the females, but the difference is not significant. In detail, the males have lower scores in somatization, compulsive symptoms, depression, anxiety, hostility and higher scores in interpersonal sensitivity, horror, paranoid and psychotic matters. The health of somatization is significantly better than that of the females, but they are obviously worse in interpersonal sensitivity.3. When compared with other teachers, the total average and factor scores of the teachers in charge of classes are all higher, among which there is significant difference in the somatization.4. The teachers with senior professional titles have lower scores in the total score, total average and other factors; the teachers with intermediate professional titles have higher scores in the total score, the total average and other factors. Those with junior titles and below are in the middle. Except phobia and psychotic matters, the teachers with senior titles have significant differences with those with intermediate titles. 5. The urban teachers'mental condition is slightly better than suburban teachers', but the difference is not significant.6. The better educated, the better mental health. Among them, the teachers with a bachelors'degree and above have great differences with those graduating from secondary normal schools and junior colleges.
