American5C standards is nation-level foreign languages teaching standardswhich was issued by American Foreign Languages Teaching Committee in1996,known as Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the21st Century. It isbriefly called5C standards because the main five standards are all started by theletter C.5C standards is not only the guide for American foreign languagesteaching, but also instruct the direction for teaching Chinese in America.The thesis firstly introduced background information, theory and chiefcontent for American5C standards, as well as the brief introduction of task-basedteaching method and TPR (Total Physical Response) teaching method via history,theory, teaching model and evaluation. The author created a5C analysis table toanalyze the two teaching methods in Chinese class via theory origin,implementing, model design, teaching result, with his own teaching practice inConfucius Institute of University of Kentucky of America. By using variousresearch methods, such as questionaire, class observation, interview etc., thethesis analyzes and compares the teaching results of task-based and TPR teachingmethods in Chinese classes under the5C standards of America by evaluatingfrom teachers, students, society, disadvantages of the two teaching methods andcharacteristics of American students. Secondly, the thesis concludes sevenenlightments and suggestions for Chinese international education by analyzingand evaluating application of task-based and TPR teaching methods in Chineseclass from the aspect of American5C standards. Lastly, research result has beenmade. Task-based and TPR teaching methods are better teaching methods whichcan easily meet the requirement of American5C standards. Affected by5Cstandards, the two teaching methods are improved. TPR is better for elementarylearners or simple contents while task-based is for advanced learners or complexcontents. Multiple teaching methods used in Chinese class can make a betterteaching result in order to reach the5C standards. Limitation and next step of theresearch are listed out at the end of the thesis for the readers’ reference.The purpose of doing the research in the thesis is to promote and improvethe teaching efficiency for teachers who focus on Chinese international educationboth in America and abroad.
