Time adverb is an important part of Chinese lexicon. Because of its large number and complex usage, foreign students learning Chinese often make mistakes while using them. Therefore, teachers teaching Chinese as a second language always put great emphasis on time adverbs. This practice has yielded fruitful achievements in the study of time adverb. However, there are still some problems which assert themselves in the research of time adverbs, such as how it would be applied to second language teaching.This paper takes time adverbs as its major focus, examining principles for categorizing them. In the article, the paper selects a number of typical errors, studying the reason behind it. It is argued that the main causes for this phenomenon are cross-cultural and cultural negative transfer, inefficient teaching methods, and the negative effects of learners who avoid the study of time adverbs. Based on the discussion before, then we undertake to put its main focus on how to improve the teaching efficiency of time adverbs. It also proposes efficient teaching methods. After that, advices are given to teachers, second language learners and textbook writers in terms of how to facilitate the study of time adverbs.
