Based on the reality of Qingdao port, competitive power of the port from theaspect of completive edge by using theories of strategic management, operationplanning, marketing, organizational behavior etc. in terms of both quantitative andqualitative methods is investigated in this thesis.In this thesis a definition of competitive power of port enterprises is presentedand features as well as the origins of port enterprises' competitive power are shownbased on elementary concept as well as operational practice of the port and with thehelp of theories of competitive power and competitive strategy. According todomestic and international situation, this thesis makes an analysis of current portindustry status and existing hardware/software and managerial problems and externalenvironment of the port industry in China. This thesis classifies competitive forcerelated environmental factors as general and specific ones, and analyzes general onesfrom angles as politics, economics, culture, natural resources and technology. UsingMichel Porter's model of five-force structure, this thesis analyzes respectiveperformances of the five competitive forces in competitions of port enterprises andargues that client and peer competitions play more important roles. Based on theaforementioned status and external environment analysis, this thesis gives outperspectives of the port industry. This thesis analyzes external environment of theQingdao Port as well as respective current status and competitive strategies of itsmajor domestic and foreign rivals –Tianjin Port, Dalian Port, and Ports in Korea andJapan. In addition, the internal features of the enterprise are analyzed in this thesis bymeans of both resource strength and its weakness. On top of that, the overallcompetitive strength of Qingdao Port is appraised using combined quantitative andqualitative methods and AHP. Then the thesis comes to an assertion that QingdaoPort possesses both strong realistic and potential competitive power. According toQingdao Port's self status, strategic vision and port industry development trend,strategies and suggestions of boosting competitive strength of Qingdao Port arefurther developed in this thesis.Finally, a strategy has been developed and some suggestions have been madefor Qingdao Port in this thesis. What contributions have been made in this thesis willhelp the port lead to a competitive advantage and may set up a decision-makingreference to enterprises alike.
