The Improvement Of Urban Function And Urban Renewal For Shanghai

Tracking back to the history of urban development, the whole course is full of constant renewal and transforming. It's a process of metabolism. Urban renewal make the city get new space to develop and upgrade. It exists in the course of urban development as a self-regulation mechanism.According to the rule of urban development and the history of urban renewal in western countries, we find out it is improvement of urban function that works as urban renewal's motility. However, limited by microcosmic angles, the researches about urban renewal of architecture and urban planning are always lack of research of urban development macroscopically. So this thesis will research how does improvement of urban function do to urban renewal. What's more, this paper will especially research urban renewal of Shanghai as an example, putting forward several problems and trying to make a superficial study on them.There are six parts in this thesis. The first part is the introduction of the research, putting forward why the thesis chose the topic and describing research approach and frame. The second part and the third part present basic theories of urban renewal and urban function, then discuss the relationships between them. The next two parts is about research of Shanghai's urban renewal. The last part is the conclusion of the whole thesis. The details as follows:The second part reviews and combs on the development of urban renewal in western countries and correlative theories so as to explain the meaning of urban renewal more intensively. Then the paper analyses the research in our country, explaining the special angle of this thesis' research. On the basis of these discusses, the meaning of urban renewal in this thesis will be given.The third part first explains what is urban function and discusses the rules of urban development. From four aspects as economical function, social function, cultural function and ecological function, the thesis set up a system about the relationships between urban function and urban renewal. Then the paper introduces London's renewal as an example to terrify the relationships.The fourth part reviews the changes of Shanghai's urban function. In 1930's, Shanghai was the important economical and financial center of the Far East and was the cultural center of old China.
