There is great progress in tourism education in China after more then 30 years development. However, the research on the profession development of tourism management teachers is still a weak link, and it does not draw great attention of the scholars at home, although teachers play a crucial role in tourism course development and in training the professionals. A standard system on planning professional development of teachers is expected.After a comprehensive analysis on the contemporary professional development of tourism teachers in high school, this paper poses the existing problems and factors affecting the professional development. Drawing on successful experiences of professional development models abroad, the author proposes a concept which consists of occupational consciousness, occupational ability and the guarantee system. What's more, measures and suggestions are also put forward with the purpose of promoting the professional development of teachers.There are five parts in this paper:Chapter one is the introduction. Research background, research methods, the significance of the topic, and the relevant theories both at home and abroad are introduced in this part, as well as the frame of this paper and its innovation.The basic theory of this paper, as well as the relevant concepts and theories are presented in chapter two. In this chapter, the distinction and connection of professional training and professional development are expounded, and the driving force of professional development of teachers and its characteristics are analyzed. On this basis, the author proposes two theories: the professional development and stimulus.Chapter three is the central part. Through questionnaires and interviews the author puts forward the problems in professional development and the affecting factors.A developing conception is put forward in chapter four. The author proposes methods for improvement from the following perspectives: occupational consciousness, occupational ability and the guarantee system established by the school.Finally, the disadvantages and future research directions are discussed in chapter five.
