Although convention& exhibition (CE) industry started late in China, it has gained a lot of attention of hub cities for its enormous economic and social benefits and grows rapidly all over the country. Now, CE industry has begun to take shape with a ladder-like regional distribution and forms five industrial economy belts in China. However, the"over-heat"phenomenon of CE industry also becomes more and more prominent. Many cities set a sightless target for CE industry without considering their real conditions. This causes huge waste of resources, serious market disorder and malignant competition between cities and really does harm to the healthy and sustainable development of their CE industry. So it requires us to speed up the research on the environmental factors of CE industry and this is just the purpose of the paper. This study is divided into three parts:In the first part, the paper illuminates the status quo of CE industry in China. The content contains item number, hall area, brand and the degree of specialization of exhibitions in recent years. The five belts of CE economy are listed such as Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, Bohai Sea, the Midwest and Northeast of China. At the same time, we take note of the problems existed in the development of CE industry, such as sightless programming of expo halls, out-of-order competition and repetitive expo hold and carry through some preliminary analysis of the causes of these problems. The second part is analysis of external environmental factors of CE industry in China. Indicators system is established based on the"Diamond model of National Advantage Theory"by Michael E. Potter. Then, principal component analysis and regression analysis are utilized for extracting. Three major influencing factors are obtained, namely, the level of economic development, infrastructure construction and related industries. The third part is study on internal factors of CE. First of all, in accordance with relevant literature, factors of the internal condition are listed from the perspective of exhibitors and visitors respectively. Then, on the basis of investigation data, the main factors of concern and primary calculation of their weights are acquired using principal component analysis. Finally, we construct a hierarchy system of affecting factors of CE industry in China. Through these studies, the key factors and their impact of CE industry environment are revealed to enable the people a more comprehensive evaluation for the potential of different regions. The main research methods used in this study include: empirical analysis, principal component analysis, gray correlation analysis and so on.
