As the node of foreign trade, Port plays an important role. Port economy can accumulate and release mass effects to promote urban economy and regional economic development. The city developed as a result of port, and the port is useful to a city, this exactly explains the relationship of city and its port. The development degree of port economy determines whether the city or the region can become growth center or not. So promote the transformation mode of port will have significant effects on the improvement of port function, the increase of port efficiency, the lower of logistic costs, the improvement of productivity and the development of regional economy.This article briefly introduced the basic theories of port economics and regional economics. With the combination of economic development situation and policies for Guangzhou Port, a detailed analysis on the economic development of Guangzhou port was given, the degree of coordination of Guangzhou Port economy and urban economy was calculated and the three stages of Guangzhou Port was divided. After that a comparative study on the competitiveness was carried out among Guangzhou Port, Shenzhen Port and Hong Kong Port, SWOT analysis was also used to determine the position of Guangzhou Port. Based on the above empirical analysis, this article put forward the view of transformation to the Third Generation Port, which integrated the function of logistic service with the basement of urban economic development. Guangzhou Port should aim at becoming regional shipping center and logistics center, should apply the strategies based on SWOT analysis to promote the development of Port economy and coordination between Guangzhou port economy and urban economy.
