With the concept of industrial design was introduced into China, the society realized the importance of industrial design gradually. According to it, our subject catalogue of higher education has made a few adjustments. Many engineering universities and comprehensive universities opened industrial design college major in recent years; they began to foster the professional personnel in industrial design. Nowadays, the industrial design education in engineering universities plays an important role on the industrial design education in China. Although the trend is correct, but we must realize that China which has a large scale education of industrial design is still lacking of design and strong in manufacturing. To a certain extent, our industrial design education has accepted western teaching theories and teaching mode blindly leads to the contradiction.The education system of industrial design which is under the background of engineering is in the stage of development, needing much more "nutrients" to promote its development. In the meantime, the development of industrial design education is mature and perfect in many western countries, but it will hinder the development of our industrial design education if we use the western education mode without choosing. Therefore, we must compare the Chinese and Western education systems of industrial design objectively and systematically. On the basis of it, we "take the essence, discard the dregs" combining with our actual situation, so we can promote the development of industrial design education effectively.In view of this, the topic of my paper center on Chinese and Western education systems of industrial design which are under the background of engineering. This paper elaborates on the differences between them within the framework of their curricular system, teaching model and course evaluation system. We can realize the disadvantages of our industrial design education which is under the background of engineering through in-depth analysis and comparison. Lastly, in order to eliminate these drawbacks in the three aspects, I put forward my improvement ideas and opinions combining with the actual situation in China.The paper systematically compare the differences on the above three aspects between Chinese and Western education systems of industrial design which are under the background of engineering, it pays attention to the organic connection of the three aspects. The paper will have the positive significance for the overall development of our industrial design education system.
