We usually equate one's reading competency and his English language proficiency and reading is put in the most important place in New English Curriculum Standards, where different requirements have been made according to different grades. With the development of Information Technology, education informationization has become an important aspect of education reform. The integration between Information Technology and curriculum teaching has been the core of education reform. Especially the rapid development and wild application of multimedia net technology facilitate the improvement of education technology, teaching theory and teaching practice. Furthermore, over the past few years, the Internet has emerged as a prominent new technology and the application of multimedia net technology provides the English teaching reform with advantageous conditions. The influence of such a powerful technological tool has pervaded all aspects of the education, business, and economy of our world. At the same time constructivist learning theory and modern information technology are the two educational supporting points. And it is essential to combine the constructivism theory and modern information technology, which will make the teaching system more reasonable and effective. Based on this opinion, this dissertation mainly probes into the feasibility and effectiveness of web-based English reading teaching in Senior High School, exploring ways to improve reading teaching in web-based environment.In this paper, the author first runs back over requirements of different grades for High School students in New English Curriculum Standards, analyses the problems existing in current English reading teaching in Senior High Schools, then states the rationale and advantages of web-based English teaching, the author also goes further into illustration on how to improve the reading teaching and enhance classroom effectiveness by means of multimedia and the Internet. Finally, the author thinks that some issues should be paid attention to in web-based English teaching in Chinese context.
