Self-taught Higher Education Examination (referred to as SET) is an essential part of the higher education system in our country. As a combination of education and examination system, SET makes an enormous contribution to the social development and the higher education reform. In new condition, SET must be carried out reform and innovation to make better services for the construction of a learning society. A systematic analysis of the history and development status of SET is made in this paper, hanging upon the thread of the composition of Self-taught Examination System. From the future development trends of SET, aiming at the reform and innovation of SET, the paper puts forward some views:the construction of the "curriculum supermarket" makes the self-examination curriculum more flexible to open up possibility for the learning society; Closer communication and cooperation with other forms of education, such as industry, sector, improves the education quality of SET and widened channels for social opening education; the development of rural self-examination and the construction of rural community colleges is of significance to further develop the human resources in rural communities and set up platform of rural life-long education; the assessment method of "multi-evaluation" achieve evaluation objectives, content, subject, mode of diversification, prominent on the practical ability and creative spirit of the study, improve the quality of personnel training; construction of the standardizing question bank, and promote the scientific identification, standardization and modernization of self-examination which is as a national examination.
