The Higher Education Self-taught Examination System is a national education exam system. It is from China's national conditions which was established with Chinese characteristics. Although the resources of the Higher Education were estremely scare, this new mode of education had got a huge development space for its high degree of openness, flexibility, economy and the authority. The Self-taught examination history is also an evolving history of educational innovation. It has nathing but the support of national policies only, In short time, it made great progress. Without the soul of innovation, it is hard to imagine to achieve such kind of success. The purpose of this paper is trying to seek a viable way for the Current development predicament of self-taught educadution examination. It begins with the self-taught examination ststem's development process, tracking and analysing the different characteristics of every stage ,in order to probe the internal threads of the self-taught examination system.The development of self-taught examination can be divided into three periods : the creation period (1978-1985); the development and strengthening period (1986-2000), and the Current development predicament period(after2001).During each period ,it showed different characteristics ,but it always tried to meet the need of the social development. The current higher education environment has undergone fundamental changes, Self-examination should gradually weaken its role of qualification compensation and strengthen the functions of the continue education and lifelong education .Meanwhile ,we must actively communicate with other forms of higher education and try to establish the field of adult education national examination system .by that, we can show the advantages of the self-taught exam and improve the quality of adult higher education.
