The Self-Taught Higher Education Examination (STE) is a national examination system based on the self-study. There were not enough human resources for nation-building with the China's Reform and Opening up. As the same time, however, the higher education under the weak economy could not meet this demand. Under the promotion of self-study and social aid in study, the STE had been established in the background of a certain political, economy and culture. The SET has played positive roles and achieved good results in the self-study,the increasing of education equity, the wealth of educational resources and the assessment of the self-study, etc. in the thirty-year development. However, as the expansion of the higher education began in the last century, the mass higher education arises in China. The Chinese education has been effected by mass higher education in many areas. The SET with the educational pattern can not avoid the impact of this trend. Under the influence of mass higher education, the STE has met difficulties in the number of students, employmen, social aid in study and so on. In this situation, it is worth of considering whether the STE were continued. For this problem, many people hold the view of abolition of the STE. However, this paper argues that the STE which has valuable experiences in organization of examination would still play its due role. But, the STE should choose the road of transformation, and emphasize the re-education and the non-academic education, and return the job education for services of adult education. In this process, it is worthy of consideration to introduce the distance education into the STE.
