Vocational school education plays an important role in China at the present stage. It is an important way to promote China's economic and social development and employment. While, vocational school students bear high rate of problematic behaviors. Underachievement is the most common phenomenon among them, which is often accompanied with many other adolescent problematic behaviors. The study was conducted among adolescent underachievers, represented by Holden and the vocational school students whom I taught. The core of this thesis is to explore the root cause of adolescent problematic behaviors. It attempts to answer:(1) what is the root cause of adolescent problematic behaviors? (2) how to help them achieve their self-identity, and go through this special stage? The research method adopted in the study is hypertext interpretation on the basis of text-analysis. Through a postmodern interpretation of the classic, this paper aims to explore its enlightenment for contemporary Chinese vocational school education. With literature review and theoretical research on adolescent problematic behaviors abroad and at home, the thesis is based upon the theories of Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems and Erik H. Erikson's identity versus role confusion. This thesis creatively divides adolescent rebellious behaviors into macro scope and micro scope. Historical background, social environment, school environment, family influence, and personal factors of the two different levels of adolescent rebellion are carefully analyzed. Interpretation of the classical rebellious adolescent—Holden's problematic behaviors, with relevant research data, as well as my teaching experience, conclusions of the study are as followed:(1) Absence of self-identity is the root cause of many adolescent problematic behaviors. It's the internal causes.(2) Historical background, social environment, school environment, family influence are the external factors. (3) The specific ways and means to help adolescents achieve self-identity must be explored in an all-round way through parents, peers, school and society. This study aims to help parents, schools and the society as a whole have a better understanding of the living state of those rebellious adolescents represented by Holden. And more importantly, this study also aims to bring these various forces together to accompany problematic adolescents to pass through this particular life stage steadily.
