In this paper, two herbal pairs and two single herbals were selected for study, including Fructus aurantii Immaturus (FAI)-Pericarpium citri Reticulatae (PCR), Rhizoma Zingiberis (RZ)-Flos Caryophyllata (FC) and Fructus aurantii Immaturus (FAI), Bittet Orange (BO). The purpose of the paper is to make an investigation of the volatile chemical components of herbal pairs and single herbal by hyphenated instruments combined with chemometric resolution method in a systematical way. We resolved the two-dimensional GC-MS data and then gained pure chromatographic curves and MS profiles of each components, and then the volatile components were analysied. Analysis of the compounds were also proceeded by comparison of temperature-programmed retention indices (PTRIs), Finally, every component was quantized by using the total volume integral method to have an qualitative and quantitative analysis. In total, the paper mainly include the following sections:1. Studies on the volatile components in HP FAI-PCR (chapter 2). 47 volatile constituents of FAI were found, which account for 91% of the total number.62 volatile constituents of PCR were checked out, which is 94.92% of the whole components.65 volatile constituents of HP FAI-PCR were evaluated, which represent 96.88% of the total content. There were 31 common volatile constituents in HP FAI-PCR and single herb FAI,51 common volatile constituents in HP FAI-PCR and single herb PCR and 28 common volatile constituents in FAI, PCR and HP FAI-PCR. Among the essential oils of HP FAI-PCR,11 new constituents appeared and 27 constituents disappeared. The highest content volatile constituent among FAI, PCR and HP FAI-PCR was D-Limonene. The content of common volatile constituents among FAI, PCR and HP FAI-PCR were different.2. Studies on the volatile components in HP RZ-FC (chapter 3).42 volatile constituents of RZ were found, which account for 86.71%of the total number.19 volatile constituents of FC were checked out, which is 99.56%of the whole components.44 volatile constituents of HP RZ-FC were evaluated, which represent 98.71%of the total content. There were 29 common volatile constituents in HP RZ-FC and single herb RZ,10 common volatile constituents in HP RZ-FC and single herb FC and 7 common volatile constituents in RZ, FC and HP RZ-FC. Among the essential oils of HP RZ-FC,12 new constituents appeared and 22 constituents disappeared. Because of the kinds of volatile oils in FC is rare, major of volatile oils in HP RZ-FC were from RZ. But the highest content volatile constituent in HP RZ-FC was from FC, it called 2-methoxy-4-(2-propenyl)-Phenol, Which represented 58.87% of the total content of volatile oil in HP RZ-FC. The content of common volatile constituents among RZ, FC and HP RZ-FC were different.3. Studies on the volatile components in FAI and BO (chapter 4).47 volatile constituents of FAI were found, which account for 91%of the total number.58 volatile constituents of BO were checked out, which is 94.31%of the whole components. The highest content volatile constituent in FAI and BO was D-Limonene. The content of common volatile constituents in FAI and BO were different.13 volatile constituents were detected in FAI but not in BO.24 volatile constituents were detected in BO but not in FAI. Generally speaking, the basic chemical constituents of FAI and BO were similar with each other, but the number and content of the volatile oils in the two medicinal herbs were relatively different. The differences between FAI and BO, to a certain degree, resulted in different Pharmacology in them.
