In this paper, the method of water-steam distillation was used to extract the essential oils from rhizome zingibers(RZ), zingiber officinale roscoe(ZOR), ginger peel(GP),fructus aurantii immaturus (FAI),cortex cinnamomi(CC), flos lonicerae (FL), radix glycyrrhizae(RG) and drug pairs FAI-CC, FL-RG Chemical components of these essential oils were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS) together with temperature-programmed retention indices(PTRIs) and heuristic evolvimg latent projections (HELP) method. The common compounds between the individual herbs and drug pair were analyzed by the method of alternative moving windows factor analysis(AMWFA).Finally, every component was quantized using the total volume integral method1. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the volatile chemical components in rhizome zingibers(RZ), zingiber officinale roscoe(ZOR) and ginger peel(GP) with hyphenated GC-MS and HELP method (chapter 2). The two-dimensional GC-MS data were resolved and processed by the HELP method to obtain pure chromatographic curves and MS profiles, and then the volatile components were identified together with PTRIs. Therefore, the reliability and accuracy of qualitative analysis were greatly enhanced because the results are obtained from the pure mass spectrum of each compound.2. Systematical investigation of the volatile components in HP fructus aurantii immaturus(FAI)-cortex cinnamomi(CC) (chapter 3). HP FAI-CC is one of the HPs for regulating qi, and the volatile components from the HPs of regulating qi are pharmaceutically active. The volatile components from FAI, CC and HP FAI-CC were separated and detected by GC-MS and PTRIs, and the comparative analysis of common volatile constituents between the HP FAI-CC and its single herbs was performed by GC-MS combined with alternative moving window factor analysis (AMWFA).3. Systematical investigation of the volatile components in HP flos lonicerae (FL)-radix glycyrrhizae(RG) (chapter 4). HP FL-RG is one of the HPs for treating noxious heat syndromes, and the volatile components from the HPs of treating noxious heat syndromes are pharmaceutically active. The hyphenated GC-MS was used to separate and detect the volatile oils from single herbal medicines FL, RG and HP FL-RG, Identification of the compounds was also assisted by comparison of PTRIs. and then AMWFA was employed to comparative analysis of volatile constituents between HP FL-RG and its single herbal medicines. The results of the study will lay the foundation for the further research of the theory of compatibility of traditional Chinese medicine and clinical work.
