Objective:To observe the effect of acupuncture therapy on the change of waist circumference, hip circumference,waist-hip ratio, body weight,BMI among simple obesity patients. To know the influence of acupuncture therapy for patients with simple obesity on the Fasting Blood Glucose(FBG),Insulin,Blood Lipid(BL), Insulin Sensitivity Index(ISI).Method:One-group posttest-posttest design was applied in this study.90 women with simple obesity were recruited and received the acupuncture therapy.Obesity can be divided into two types:1.The Simple Obesity that is the obesity caused by taking in great amounts of energy without clear primary disease. This is the most common types of obesity and accounts for about 95%of obesity. It involves physical obesity and acquired obesity.2.The Secondary Obesity is also known as the symptom of obesity and accounts for about 5%of obesity, due to an endocrine disorder or other diseases. In 2000,Asia Obesity Task Association of WHO brought forward the BMI for adults:23.0 to 24.9 for the pre-obese(overweight);25.0 to 29.9 as theⅠdegree for obesity;above 30.0 was defined asⅡdegree of obesity.According to the criteria,59 cases wereⅠdegree obesity and 31 cases wereⅡdegree obesity. The Chinese medicine acupuncture therapy named "Tonifying Qi,spleen and Xiao phlegm turbidity" were adopted.Eight acupoints around the navel including Tianshu Point, Huaroumen Point,Wailing Point,Yinjiao Point,Shuifen Point,Guanyuan Point, Zusanli Point, and so on were selected for the acupuncture treatment with Ear Point's pressure.None of other obesity therapy was used simultaneously. The food intake and physical activity status before and during therapy were recorded to be controlled as the confounding factors.Waist circumference, hip circumference,waist-hip ratio, body weight,BMI changes were measured before and after acupuncture. The effect comparison was conducted betweenⅠandⅡdegree of obesity and between different age or vacation groups.By use of Roche MODULAR automatic biochemical analyzer and supporting reagents of ROCHE company. The levels of Fasting Blood Glucose(FBG),serum Triglyceride(TG),serum Cholesterol(TC),serum High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol(HDL-C),serum Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol(LDL-C) were detected before and after a course of the acupuncture. The Fasting Insulin(INS) was detected through ROCHE E170 immunoassay and supporting reagents. The insulin sensitivity index(ISI),ISI=ln[1/(INS×FBG)]was calculated. The changes of the levels of FBG,INS,ISI,TC,TG,LDL-C,HDL-C were observed before and after acupuncture. Results:From our study,we found:1.In the treatment of the acupuncture treatment, there was no difference of energy intake between before and during the acupuncture.2.In the treatment of the acupuncture treatment, there was no difference of energy expenditure between before and during the acupuncture.3.After a course of acupuncture treatment, waist circumference, hip circumference,waist-hip ratio, body weight and BMI decreased(P<0.05).4.There was no statistical difference of the therapy effect between the first-degree and second-degree obesity(X~2=2.346,P>0.05).5.There was no difference of the therapy effect between the different age and vacation groups.6.After the acupuncture treatment, the levels of FBG,INS,TC,TG,LDL-C were significantly lowered, and the ISI,HDL-C level rebounded. Conclusion:The acupuncture is an effective approach for obesity therapy. But there is no difference of the therapy effect between theⅠandⅡdegree obesity by acupuncture.
