The Chinese complement of state is a special phenomenon in Chinese syntax, which has no equivalent one in English. This thesis studies the English translation and makes a detailed comparison between the Chinese and English texts so as to find the right translation constructs. According to the Second Language Teaching Theory, one's mother language will influence his second language learning. We hope to find how these complements should be translated and give some suggestions for the Chinese learning and teaching. The whole thesis consists of six chapters:Chapter One introduces the scope of the research, its significance, its methodology and theoretical framework.Chapter Two is about the related literatures. It looks at the previous researches on Chinese complement of state, contrastive analysis between Chinese and English complements, and studies about the complement of state in teaching Chinese as a second language.Chapter Three gives a definition of the complement of state first, and then discusses its syntactic dimension and the semantic dimension. In the syntactic dimension, it analyses the grammatical elements. It mainly contains verb or verbal construction, adjective or adjectival construction, subject-predicate structure, fixed phrase, nominal construction and pronoun construction. In the semantic dimension, it explores the semantic orientations, such as orientated subject, object and predicative. verb. At the same time, the semantic orientations may influence the transformation.Chapter Four analyses the Chinese novel The Besieged Fortress by Ch'ien Chung-shu. We find 599 sentences with "de" complement of state, and compare them with the English translations. Most of them are transformed into Adverbial Modifier in English, and few of them are transformed into predicate or object and object complement in English, which are closely related to the characters of English grammar and culture.Chapter Five makes inquiries about the curriculums for Chinese language education and the explanations in Chinese textbooks about the complement of state. After the comparing, we give some suggestions to the teaching of Chinese as a second language.Chapter Six is the conclusion of this thesis. It also mentions the limitation of the research.
