Geographical environment and human-land relationship are the research objects of geography. But geographical environment is large-scale, cannot enter directly into classroom, observed and studied by students. Map is one of the most abundant and vivid teaching materials and tools for geography teaching. It uses specific method of performance such as graphics, texts, symbols, numbers and colors to shrunk so many geographical objects and phenomena on the spherical surface to visual two-dimensional plane. It makes observing, understanding and analysis of geographic objects possible in geography teaching. Map is an effective tool to learn geographical environment.Geographic maps plays an important role in teaching and research. It is the most suitable and important way, and also the unique feature in geographical teaching. The key to learn geography is to learn map well. In recent years, the geographical entrance examination is always with using map skills and the demand for map skills is increasingly. But the study situation of high school students is not ideal, and the teaching situation of geographic map is not satisfactory. So the level of geographical study and teaching has been unable to have a qualitative leap.In connection with map study of high school students, this paper makes No.2 Beijing Secondary School as research objects. Through questionnaires, this paper investigates and analyzes the map study status of high school students:their map ability is weak, including map knowledge, map figuring, map using, map drafting and map analysis. They have not yet formed a mental map mode, and they do not attach importance to geography teaching. The main reasons for these phenomena are students, teachers, school and some others. This paper integrates different causes of weak capacity an thories such as geography teaching, proposes strategies and methods to build students' map capacity in geography teaching from six aspects:interest in learning map; map basics;levels of map capabilities; geography migration teaching; map application capabilities;geography learning environment.
