Higher mathematics is a public basic course for engineering specialty studentsof higher vocational colleges. It is a tool for students to learn professional disciplines,and also plays an important role in cultivating students’ comprehensive qualities andabilities. As a basic and instrumental discipline, the teaching reform of highermathematics has aroused more and more attention among the teachers of highervocational colleges.Adopting literature analysis, questionnaire survey, interview method,theoretical exploration, and case study method, this study investigates the presentsituation of higher mathematics teaching in architecture majors of YunnanVocational College of National-defense Technology. On the basis of theinvestigation, the study finds out the problems existing in the course teaching, andanalyzes the reasons for these problems. And then under the guidance of modernscientific educational theory, structuralism curriculum theory, Freudenthal’sMathematical Education Thought, and developmental teaching evaluation theory,this study proposes four teaching reform measures: changing teaching ideas, andgetting the course orientation; constructing content knowledge system, andcompiling school-based teaching materials; improving teaching methods; andadopting reasonable teaching evaluation. Moreover, applying these four teachingreform measures, this study has carried out5-month teaching reform in highermathematics for architecture majors.The main conclusions are: after the application of the teaching strategiesmentioned above, the students are having more explicit learning objectives andtaking the initiative in learning, and their learning scores have been increasedobviously; the teaching reform of higher mathematics has positive transfer in theteaching and learning of construction mechanics.This study also shows that application of educational theories to guide teachingreform in colleges and universities, then test by practice and constant revision will behelpful to form a scientific, reasonable and feasible professional mathematics teaching theory system. Furthermore, the teaching level of higher mathematics of theteachers in higher vocational colleges will be improved, and their professionalqualities will be promoted in this way.
