This thesis is intended to explore the use of stop-motion animation in theteaching of fine arts in primary schools. As a newly-fledging industry, animation haswon the attention of various powers worldwide due to its advantages of beinghigh-profiting and pollution-free. In recent years, China also devotes great efforts todeveloping it, providing supporting policies and laws, and educating animation talentsin primary and secondary schools. Primary education can lay the foundation for thedevelopment of such talents, as pupils have strong natural interests in this aspect. Onthe other hand, they are still limited in such competences as understanding, thinkingand hands-on abilities, so much so that some animation production methods areinappropriate for their learning. So, we may inquire is there any production methodssuitable for pupils and enabling them to study easily and pleasantly?By far, stop-motion animation has enjoyed over one-hundred years ofdevelopment, and been successfully applied in the teaching of interest groups both athome and abroad. The questions to be answered are can it be applied to classroomteaching, and is there any good recommendations to be shared in the promotion ofstop-motion animation teaching. Based on related pedagogical theories and taking thephysical and mental features of pupils into account, the present author investigatedinto some corresponding teaching strategies that are of applicability and innovation, among which they are primarily oriented towards the fourth-graders.The thesis first provides a literature review on existing researches concerned, andthereupon analyzes the feasibility of offering stop-motion animation in primaryschools, both theoretically and practically. Its main body consists of threechapters/sections: Chapter One gives a definition of the concept of stop-motionanimation, its history and production technology, and then explores the feasibility ofproviding its teaching by taking the physical and psychological features of pupils intoconsideration, thus laying the theoretical foundation for the whole thesis; ChapterTwo is about the teaching practice of stop-motion animation in primary classrooms, covering the selection of teaching contents, teaching difficulties as well as assessment methods; empirical teaching cases are offered in Chapter Three, including theteaching practice in Liutuan Primary School of Changyi, Weifang City and thatnamed The Sea Summer Breeze Animation Program; the last chapter explores theproblems existing in present stop-motion animation teaching and their solutions. Those cases derive from my own other cases also derive from my own teachingpractices. By personally experiencing the teaching situations, the author explored thestrategies for applying stop-motion animation in fine art teaching in primary schools.Considering the status quo of animation teaching in Chinese primary classrooms, thethesis proposes suggestions and practical strategies for stop-motion animationteaching so as to satisfy the needs of such talents and studentsā€™development. Bycombining research with practices, the author kept contemplating in practicing, andthereupon adjusted the direction, revised the strategies and enhanced the details.
