Art Area supports children to make choices and explore spontaneously; it also enable children to play and learn through handling and manipulating things. Material provision constitutes a critical component of the Art Area activities. There is limited research on how material provision influence children’s active learning. This study aims to investigate this question.With participant observation and case study as methods, this study focuses on the characteristics of material provision, discussing the impact of material provision on 4-year-old children’s active learning. It will explore the current condition of material provision and active learning. It will also diagnose various problems in practice, including a lack of consideration of children’s experience, overemphasizing particular approach, dismissing children’s active thinking, and not giving sufficient space for children’s exploration of materials. This study also makes recommendations accordingly. For example, teachers should pay attention to young children’s experience and interest, give them space to explore freely, improve observation and reflection abilities, improve the effectiveness of material provision, and thus promote children’s active learning.
