The Chinese nation is a nation of poetry. There is an old saying that reading more makes a better temperament. The great educator Confucius once said, "No poetry, no words."① The inheritance of the Chinese poetry culture is not just the task work of Chinese teaching. It can’t be denied that the Chinese textbooks play an important role in inheriting the ancient Chinese poetry. The Compulsory Education Chinese Curriculum Standards clearly points out that the period objective of the fourth stage (Grade 7-9) of the compulsory education includes:reading aloud ancient poetry, reading simple writings in classical Chinese and understanding the basic contents with help of notes and reference books. With the coming out of the policy of "many textbooks on one guideline" and the promotion of the new curriculum reform, different versions of Chinese textbooks appear in succession. The PEP textbooks are adapted most widely and involve most people. The major task of the paper is to simply analyze the ancient poetry of the PEP Chinese textbooks, explores its characteristics and find strategies, in order to offer some power to anthology of the ancient poetry of PEP Chinese textbooks.The paper will explore the anthology of ancient poetry in PEP Chinese textbook in four parts.The first part is to show the importance of the ancient poetry and learning ancient poetry, describe the rich aesthetic factors of the ancient poetry, explain the necessity of aesthetic education of the ancient poetry of Chinese in high school.The second part is to analyze the anthology of ancient poetry in textbooks and simply analyze the editorial idea and system of PEP Chinese textbooks of high school. The PEP high school Chinese textbooks are co-compiled by the staff in colleges and front-line teachers. They have wide range of application. The writer will analyze the editorial idea, structure of textbooks, compilation of unites and article selection. The emphasis of this part is to explore the selection of ancient poetry in textbooks from number of selected articles, genre, subjects, represented dynasties and notes of poetry.The third part emphasizes problems of ancient poetry in PEP high school Chinese textbooks. The paper will solve problems from poetry selection, compilation and notes.The last part provides suggestions to the studied contents. The paper will make self-examination on notes of ancient poetry and provide some suggestions for compilers’reference.
