In popularizing swimming program among primary and middle schools in Shan Dong Province, students’ psychological fear of water is one of the most important reasons affecting the quality of swimming teaching. This thesis takes sports psychology, cognitive psychology and modern teaching theory as guiding theories. By studying related materials, interviewing experts, giving out questionnaires and doing experiments, and analyzing statistics, this thesis analyzes the phenomenon of being afraid of water among students as swimming beginners, designing three hydrophobic psychological adjustment methods by applying theory of emotion regulation. It turns out to be very effective by applying it in actual swimming teachings for beginners. In this thesis, conclusions are as follows:Firstly, the survey shows that at the beginning of learning, there are 73% of students who have slight fear of water or hydrophobic psychology in Grade Two, Teng Bei High School. Hydrophobic psychology of swimming teaching leads to a negative state of students. Eliminating or reducing the fear of water in the learning process is a very useful way.Secondly, there are three reasons why this negative state of mind exists: situational factors which means different swimming teaching facilities, swimming pool depth; Different physiological status, qualities and learning attitudes varies from different individuals; Cognitive factor refers to the errors in swimming learning technology, which result in failure and thus, produce the fear of water.Thirdly, in swimming teaching, fear water psychological adjustments of adjusting states of fearing water are causing adjustment and responding adjustment. Causing adjustment includes creating swimming situation, attention diversion and changing cognitive adjustments. Responding adjustment refers to adjusting physiological reaction, subjective experience and expression behavior.Last but not least, in swimming teaching, the levels of states of fearing water are: severe, moderate, slight, and non-fearing. According to the fear water adjustment theory, this thesis combines the actual conditions of swimming teaching, designing the following regulations as teaching methods:(1) Performing swimming presentations(2) Adjusting system desensitization(3) Implying swimming adjustments. These three methods as auxiliary methods in swimming-teaching experiment. It is proved that they are significantly effective to help eliminating the fear of water, to help students in mastering swimming skills and improving teaching quality.
