Chinese language teaching in middle school is the education of the language shared byall Chinese people. It has the features of instrument, humanity, foundation, accumulation,practice and application. Owing to the insufficient recognition of the essence of the course ofChinese language, the features of humanity and accumulation of this course are usuallyneglected, which leads to the low efficiency in the Chinese language teaching. Extracurricularreading covers various reading activities except reading exercises in class,the characteristic ofwhich is independent selecting, and the essence of which is non-text book reading materials.Extracurricular reading is one of the most foundational and effective methods to improve thequality of Chinese language teaching .To Chinese language teaching extracurricular readinghas the following significance: It meets the requirement of educating students?initiative andcreative ability from the point of view of intelligence and education.It best embodies theessential nature, of language teaching, and can better accomplish the duty of Chinese languageteaching. It抯 the vital and beneficial supplement of classroom reading. At present, the timethe students can spend on extracurricular reading and the reading materials the students canget are very much limited, so the role the extracurricular reading plays in Chinese languageteaching is losing its function. The reasons are as follows: influence of traditionalexam-oriented education; imperfection of education system; the lag of Chinese languageteaching concept; impact of popular culture. For these reasons, this paper advances strategiesto reinforce middle school students?extracurricular reading:Macroscopically, we should transform our education concept, strengthen educationalsystem reform, enhance the understanding of significance of extracurricular reading toChinese language teaching, and solve the problem of insufficient extracurricular reading fort~uderits. Microscopically, Chinese language teachers4lrst should improve their own quality,and then instruct their students to do extracurricular reading in the following ways: motivatetheir students?interest in extracurricular reading; develop their habit of doing extracurricularreading; recommend good books to students to read extensively; provide students withmethods of extracurricular reading; give different instructions to different students accordingto their personality. While instructing students to do reading, teachers should pay attention tothe following points: Stick to the principle of voluntary reading; focus on book reading;encourage students to read creatively; teach students to handle all kinds of relations; checkhow the students have done the extracurricular reading. Students should also pay attention tothe following aspects while reading: reinforce the sense of initiative; understand the nature ofthe course of Chinese language correctly and meaning of extracurricular reading to Chineselanguage learning; develop creative reading by associating with one抯 own personality; copecorrectly with such relations as classic literature works and popular culture. In addition,students?parents should ensure the students have adequate time, good place, appropriatereading materials and play a role as supervisor in students?extracurricular reading.
