Comprehensive high school is an independent type of high schools. The concept 'comprehensive high school' came from a report, given in 1918 by the Secondary Education Reform Committee attached to American Education Association, which stressed that comprehensive high schools be set up, including various educational programs. The students in this type of schools were streamed into three divisions: academic division, general division & vocational division.In order to carry out the strategy, "Top Ranking City with Top Ranking Education", and to generalize high school education in Shanghai, the Education Committee of Shanghai City has approved a project that some secondary vocational schools and middle schools could launch this kind of pilot classes.To make sure the pilot project could be carried out more effectively and guarantee the quality, to promote the work of generalization of high school education, to explore the rules, models and characters of comprehensive high schools as well as the existing problems in the practice, the research group, of which the author is a member, have given some investigations and researches in those pilot schools. This paper is a result of the investigations.The dissertation traces back the development history of comprehensive high schools overseas, meanwhile, comparatively analyzes the features and status of comprehensive high schools in three country: Britain, American & Japan, furthermore discusses the reasons why the pilot project was launched in Shanghai. It gives much information about the situation of comprehensive high schools in Shanghai, which has been got by the way of questionnaire survey. Finally some suggestions are given on how to develop comprehensive high schools properly.The whole paper is divided into the following five parts:Part One, IntroductionThis part explains the necessity of this research, defines the concept 'comprehensive high school' and introduces some methods used in the research.Part Two, History and Development of Comprehensive High Schools OverseasThis Part traces back the development history of comprehensive high' school overseas, meanwhile, comparatively analyzes the features and the status of comprehensive high schools in three countries: Britain, American & Japan.Part Three , Analysis of Backgrounds and Reasons for the Development of the Comprehensive High schools In ShanghaiThis part is to study and analyze the reasons of the development of comprehensive high schools in Shanghai in the international backgrounds.Part Four, Analysis of the Status Quo of Comprehensive high schools in ShanghaiThis part introduces the status quo of piloting comprehensive high schools from the result of the questionnaire survey on school leaders, teachers and students in the comprehensive schools. Then it gives some analyses and evaluations.Part Five, Some Considerations and Suggestions on the issue of Comprehensive High Schools In ShanghaiAs to the problems analyzed in Part Four, this part gives some proposals on the solutions to them. It covers the re-understanding of the nature, the issue of curricula and teachers of comprehensive high schools and so on.
