With contemporary China as the big era backdrop, and with contemporary middle school students as research object, this article conducts a preliminary probe and discussion on the individuality study motives of contemporary middle school students utilizing the methods of theoretical research and demonstration research.In Part I of the article, through the investigation of the important role played in study motives by study needs, it is thought that study need is a basic factor in study motives, i.e. leading factor. Study needs are separated into two categories of individuality study need and sociality study need, while the study motive formed because of inclining to meet the individuality need is called individuality study motive.In Part II of the article, with the individuality needs of seven levels mentioned in the theory of need hierarchy of Maslow as basis, and incorporating the practical situation of contemporary middle school students, it is ascertained that the individuality study motives of contemporary middle school students should be studied from six aspects, namely inclining to the fulfillment of material need, the fulfillment of safety need, the fulfillment of the need of sense of belonging and love, the fulfillment of the need of respect, the fulfillment of the need of pursuing knowledge and that of self actualization. The investigation result analyzes the general situation, age difference, gender difference and school difference of individuality study motives.In Part in of the article, the factors that affect the forming and development of individuality study motives of contemporary middle school students are analyzed, and it is thought that the forming and development of individuality study motives of contemporary middle school students are inseparable with the specific social, school and family factors of contemporary China and the psychological development factors of middle school students.In Part IV of the article, how the individuality study motives influence the student development and inspire the education and teaching is analyzed, and it is thought that, the individuality study motives will not only influence the study of the students, but also influence the moral characters of the students; the teachers should correctly treat and appraise the individuality study motives of contemporary middle school students, the study enthusiasm should be cultivated and inspired by learning the current individuality study motives of contemporary middle school students.
